Library Hours and Information

Two libraries are located within the Hope Barber Shull Academic Resource Center (ARC): the Loden-Daniel Library and the Hope Barber Shull Library. The facility as a whole offers 49,500 square feet of space devoted to a variety of academic resources and services. The Loden-Daniel Library is the two-story portion of the ARC that is located on the east side. The Loden-Daniel Library was built in 1973 and named in 1974 in honor of the parents of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Loden III. The Loden-Daniel Library was built as an addition to the former Lawhorn Library, which was built in 1956, and named in honor of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Lawhorn of Temple, Texas. The Hope Barber Shull Library is the three-story, 29,000 square foot, portion of the building that was added to the west side of the Loden-Daniel Library and opened in February 2016.

The ARC provides reading and study areas, wireless Internet access, group study rooms, and a quiet room. Print and copy rooms are located on the first and second floors. The university’s archives, Reading Room, and print stacks are located on the second floor, and the Learning Commons and coffee shop are located on the first floor. During the academic year, the ARC is opened 92 hours per week.

The Learning Resource Library (LRL) is located on the lower level of the Gardner Center in Room G11, across from the Graduate Education Office. The LRL provides access to over 16,000 juvenile books, education periodicals, textbooks, and teaching kits. It sells many items for the classroom, such as bulletin board paper, borders, and poster boards; it also provides lamination, die cut, cutout maker, and bookbinding materials.

If we don’t have an article or book you need, we will try to get it from another library so you can use it. This service is only available to current students, faculty, and staff at FHU.

Processing / Postage: There is a $1 processing charge for each article and a $3 processing and postage charge for each book, usually applied to your student account.

Extra Fee: Sometimes, the lending library charges a fee to let other schools use their materials. When you submit your form, you can specify whether you are willing to pay such a fee ONLY IF IT IS REQUIRED and the limit you’re willing to pay. For instance, if you really needed a book, you might say you are willing to pay $5 if the lending library required it. Even if you say you are willing to pay a certain amount, we always try to find the material for free first! Only if we can’t locate it do we get the loan from a library that asks for a fee. Most of the loans we get do not charge a fee.

Up to 5 requests can be made in a 24-hour period. This can be a combination of book and article requests (e.g., 3 articles & 2 books). If there are more than 5 items needed, you can submit the surplus requests on the following day.

Articles tend to take a couple of workdays; they are usually faxed or emailed so they arrive quickly. Books take anywhere from a few days to two weeks; we get interlibrary loans filled from libraries all over the nation and the world. For every interlibrary loan, always request it early in case it ends up taking a few weeks to arrive.

You will receive an email notification when your item arrives. If you have requested an article, it will be emailed to you. If you have requested a book, stop by the front desk at the main library and ask for your interlibrary loan. Please return the book by the date printed on the information slip; the FHU library is responsible for any overdue fees collected by the lending library.
